The American Dream in The Great Gatsby

In its basic form, the American Dream is about success. For those who are born to money and power, the dream is already a reality, and thus is often taken for granted. For those born to poverty, however, the idea of wealth, of working to make one’s own fortune is indeed a dream. Even discounting how much there is of it, Tom's "old money" has a power beyond any that Gatsby can command. His wealth and back-- ground win the battle for Daisy, despite his habitual infidelities - an outcome that seems not only grossly unfair but morally wrong, for another point Fitzgerald is making is that if you have enough money and position you can purchase immunity from punishment (Donaldson, 189). The question that naturally arises from this is, do the rich have an American Dream?
