The pursuit of Evil by Devious Ends: The use of Language in the Miltonian Characters of Lucifer and Comus and how these tie in with the Religious Sensibility of John Milton.
This paper discusses the relationship between the language of Lucifer and Comus - two of Milton's greatest antagonists. The paper attempts to show that Milton's religious dialectic - good versus evil, evil as the seducer of innocent good - informs the language that is used by both characters. This language is convoluted and larded with rhetorical devices and, consequently, it is distinguished from the 'plain-speaking' of God or the Holy Ghost.
