The Significance of The Prince
The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli was written in 1513 and serves as one of the most important works of political thought and is one of the fundamental readings that one encounters in Western political science (Hoyt, Online). Written in response to the decay of the Italian states system, it serves as a warning to rulers about the nature of power, the nature of diplomacy, and the nature of the people that one governs. Some read Machiavelli with distaste, thinking it merely the crafty ramblings of a former ruler hoping to gain favor with the new regime. However, this essay contends that its as valid today as it was at the time that it was written and that Machiavelli was sending out a warning with his narrative instead of a bribe for the new prince. Unfortunately, The Prince contains a brutal truth that has lasted through the ages- Utopia will not exist, and the negotiation of power is whats left.
