Mohandas Gandhi
In the primary source analyzed for this paper, an excerpt Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhis Hind Swaraj is used. Gandhi wrote the Hind Swaraj in 1909 as a means of explaining his reasoning of why India needed self-rule. The excerpt is formatted as if it is an interview between a newspaper editor and a reader (Tignor 376). In the piece, Gandhi takes the role of editor. Throughout the piece he criticizes modern Western civilization with its materialism and mechanization. Gandhi sees a true Swaraj for India as being one where Indian people returned back to their ancestral civilization, during a time where civilization elevated moral being and was once again God-centric (Tignor 376).
