Cuba and Freedom. This paper argues that Cuba has taken a revolutionary path toward social transformation and a vastly different approach to birth control and maternal child health care than other Caribbean and Latin American countries. The infant mortality rate is unprecedented in all of Latin America and the Caribbean. Similarly, the death rate and life expectancy are reported at levels that are comparable to those of developed nations. Thus, the levels of both births and deaths are very low, resulting in a low rate of growth. These levels are consistent with the degree of modernity of Cuban society and the universalization of medical care.
